One of the pleasures of having grandchildren over is the deep conversations we have together. It's so refreshing to see things through their eyes. During one of our car rides, the conversation was on numbers. First, Nathan recited the numbers from 1 to 10. Then he started associating numbers with objects he sees around him. 2 trucks on the road, 3 birds on the electric wires, 1 red airplane in the sky...etc. Then he had an eureka moment: "Popo do you know that number ten is a 1 and a 0 (one and zero). And number two sounds like too or choo - like a choo choo train."
The conversation turned to food. "What's your favourite food Nathan?" And the boy answered: I like .....(and he proceeded to name all his favourite food.
Nathan: Popo my daddy bought doughnuts. Do you like doughnuts?
Me: Not really. I don't like the sweet icing
Nathan: I like the icing. Mummy also don't like the sweet icing but daddy likes the sweet icing. Popo, does Gong Gong like the sweet icing?
Me: Yes, Gong Gong likes the sweet icing,
Nathan: Hmmm... 2 girls don't like sweet. 3 boys like sweet and 1 girl (Grace) also like sweet!
Popo: That's very clever Nathan!!
Grace has a different take on Maths. One day during breakfast:
Grace: Popo I want coco pops.
Me: How many pieces do you want?
Grace: Er...mmm... Two !!
Me: OK, here are two pieces for you. (Puts 2 coco pops in her bowl)
Grace: (Looks doubtfully at her bowl) Errrr..... Two more!!
Me: OK, here are two more. OK ?
Grace: (Looks at my cereal box, feeling cheated) No, No, More! More.
(And half an hour after breakfast, she came up to me, beaming her gaping smile: "Popo, Gracie ungee......"
Who could resist that smile ? So what do you want Gracie? Cheese or yogurt?
Grace : Yogurt
(after finishing her yogurt, she wriggled up to me again: "Popo, I want cheese". What do you expect me to do ?)
