My study topic today on good governance is on the evils of corruption. Corruption weakens government administration. Corruption increases the cost of doing business and thus harms private sector and private sector development. It is a disincentive for investors. Besides, it is the poor who are most affected by corruption as it siphons off critical funds for non-critical projects. Because of corrupt practices of civil servants and politicians, projects are implemented at exorbitant costs, draining away funds for social development.
Another downside of corruption is that it distorts the intents and implementation of laws and policies ( eg the local policeman who turns a blind eye to the irty dealing in his district). Corruption also slows the delivery of services and reduces the quality of government services.
To combat corruption, government bodies should have clear and consistant application of rules, procedures and policies. There should be transparancy in the implementation of contracts and projects. All easier said than done !! (Ahem - aren't I clever?)
By the way my sister is such a wonderful blogger. I really enjoy those photos she posted. Put my garden to shame.

The practice is so much ingrain,it will take a hero to right it.Australia is no different, more so noww that there is so much trading with China, Indonesia and now IRAQ !!!(Sigh) One of our BP girl was made a prosecutor for the anti corruption department, what a mammoth task! She is very famous here and we are all very proud of her. She is now relocated to other department.
