What else did we do on this tour ? Loads of touristy stuff. For example, the Chinese loved to find objects and accord them supernatural forces that they believed those would bring blessings and prosperity. Thus while touring the sites, the tour guide would say, "It is believed that by touching this....... or by doing this, you will prosper..." Everyone would rush to do as instructed. I'm sure the tour guide must have had a field day looking at us performing those rituals.
Thus when we went into one of the caves, the guide said, "This formation looked like a deity." People would then pay obeisance.
At another part of the cave was an unique rock feature. The Hanging Rock - caused by action of waves pounding on the. By putting one's thumb to link the big hanging rock to the rock on the ground, then call the names of your loved ones, they would have a chance to do well in in their exam and be a top government official (Zhuan Yuan). Here are some devoted grandparents doing acrobatics for their dear ones.
At Fubo Park, there was a statue of a sage who was born without any hair and he continued to be hairless throughout his life. This sage was deemed to be the smartest man in ancient China. By stroking his hairless head, you could make your kids smarter. Of course, there's the caveat - you need to make a free-will offering, otherwise your wish would be rendered null and void. Lots of hopeful parents lined up
Then there was an Echo Wall. Call out the names of your loved ones and they will be blessed. Who wouldn't want that? Here's a doting grandpa looking as pleased as punch after doing the needful. Any guess whose name was called?
Sound the drums, beat the gong for good luck, blessings and prosperity!!
Ha! Ha! The things grand parents would do just for their grandchildren!!
